Project overview

JCA were engaged by the Department of Education Training (DET) to undertake a Part A Schematic proposal for Ministerial Designation (town planning purposes) and provided Part B traditional contract including engineering sub-consultants and full documentation and construction administration services. Centenary State School required a new learning centre as part of the expanded facilities through the inclusion of Year 7 students. Three sites were initially investigated and through discussions with stakeholders, the site recognised.

The building program required 3 large science laboratories, staff accommodation STEM space and flexible learning spaces which can be configured to open up to accommodate an examination centre for 180 students. Furthermore the ongoing pressures growing student numbers required the building to provide future GLAs at ground level. The consideration of the under croft provided a number of design responses to explore ways such spaces could be utilised from a shaded spectator’s facility, rally point for students to the ovals, parade and play spaces and assemblies.

Within the limited external works scope, the design team addressed problematic site areas due to overland flow through landscape and walkways and bridges. New external hardstand and seating areas are provided, and space between enhancing spaces between buildings and along building edges forming platforms viewing areas above existing play courts.

An important outcome developed from the School’s philosophy of maintaining strong links with the local community was for the ability for the building to be used after hours. The site allows for ease of access for use.
