James Cubitt Architects (JCA) in association with PTA, were the design team for the refurbishment of Level 4 of the Gardens Point Campus Library (V Block). The interiors had not undergone any major refurbishment since its completion in the late 60’s; the floor filled with high level book shelving made the space feel dark, tired, and dated, which in turn resulted in low student usage.
The redesign allowed for the opportunity to take advantage of the building’s views across the botanical gardens by altering the façade and incorporating new glazing and window seating. The floor was stripped bare to allow for the removal and installation of new services and to also expose the original architectural feature elements such as the coffered slab and bush hammered concrete core walls.
The floor plate encompasses multiple study zones of differing styles and operation, bookable meeting rooms, a tutorial room, a media lounge and a group study space that is openable to fresh air through the use of operable windows and enclosed by glazing.
