The Rainbow Residence occupies a secluded beachfront position behind the dunes and is adjacent to dense bushland to the north, creating an ideal private retreat space but with bushfire protective design as a primary consideration. The layout centres around a two-storey outdoor area which faces north, toward the bushland, and responds to a brief requiring family and holiday friendly functional design to accommodate additional guests, without the feeling of a large empty house when the owners are occupying alone. The scheme marries the charming modesty of coastal architecture with selected elements of both delight and subtle luxury. The project uses robust, fire and corrosion resistant materials paired with selected timber elements under a simple exposed timber beam skillion roof. The roof is penetrated by a lookout tower to capitalise on the views to the Pacific Ocean over the dunes.
