Project overview

JCA were engaged by the Department of Education (DoE) to undertake the role of Principal Consultant responsible for the appointment and management of the sub-consultants necessary to provide the masterplanning and design under Base Part A of three new standalone schools, being Special School, Primary School and Secondary School.

The Palmview Schools Project presented a unique and challenging situation for DoE, in that the site area available for the development reflected what DoE would typically allocate for two new schools, in this instance the site was to accommodate three. The masterplanning approach provided a design response that addressed Stages 1 – 3 of each school ensuring consideration for future site access and growth. Through this process the issue of limited site area was highlighted forcing a range of early decisions around building height necessary to incorporate all the proposed buildings within the site area for each of the schools.

This was compounded by further site challenges associated with bushfire restrictions and complexities around Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) and the Developer expectations – each of which would significantly impact on the design and process. The resultant design, which was progressed beyond Part A and taken to 50% DD (for each of the three Schools), provided a consistent architectural language across the combined ‘campus’, offering a contemporary architectural solution appropriate to the semi-urban context of the planned residential development that integrates and connects with the local community.

Assembly Halls and the Performing Arts Centre are located to all corners of the site to maximise integration with the local community. Ovals and sports courts are placed close to the proposed future community esplanade. Large buildings, embrace the site perimeter offering a layering of height as you enter each school. The masterplan reflects the unique requirements of the individual user groups of each school, creating a series of distinct identities, balanced with a sense of integration. Whilst the Primary School consists of a series of courtyards, opening out according to age, the Special School offers an embracing, protected, safe and nurturing place. The High School as a community street comprises of interconnected courtyards. Colour, materiality and landscaped outdoor space increase the sense of identity and orientation, responding to students’ needs. High level walkways link and connect learning with outdoor spaces and allow for ease of movement between.
